I would love to live
Like a river flows,
Carried by the surprise
Of its own unfolding.
-John O'Donohue
Giving the completed image a voice, it says:
I am community, rooted deeply underground.
I am light and fire in the depths, feeding and nourishing life.
I am light piercing darkness,
Love piercing fear,
Creativity piercing forgotten dreams.
There are so many ways to enter an expressive arts process.
Here's a suggestion. Give it a try.
Prepare
- Set aside 20-30 minutes for yourself.
- Get a piece of paper and some pastels, crayons, or marker and set them out.
- Select a piece of music that you like.
- Clear a little space for yourself. Stand or sit.
Music and Movement
- Put on the music, close your eyes if you like, and invite your body to receive the music. Move to the music in any way that feels good.
Art
- Whenever you like, go to the paper and begin making marks. Just stay with it and see what emerges on the paper. Keep going until you feel ready to stop.
Write
- Write down the words "I am", and, allowing your image to speak, write whatever it says.
Reflect
- What did you notice?
- What surprised you?
- What is one message that you can take into your life?
- Write those reflections in your journal.

I first became interested in Art As A Healing Practice to help with creative block. It not only helped my creative block, it changed my life and my creative process.
It is a practice I truly believe in.
