In the context of the current political divisiveness, I have been thinking a lot about polarities. I am noticing the pushes and pulls, the tension of opposites, the opposing perspectives - that show up in all aspects of life. I am also contemplating the polarities within myself - how do I decide between this and that? How do I reconcile desires and longings that
seem to be in opposition to each other?
These considerations lead me to one of my favorite practices - the mandorla - and today, I want to share that with you.
The mandorla is a geometric form that is created by two overlapping, intersecting circles, with an almond shape in the middle. I have found the mandorla form to be a useful way to work with the polarities in my life, and I have shared that with others for many years as part of the Art as a Healing Practice program.
"A polarity is a relationship between two opposite characteristics or tendencies.....It indicates two opposing but related qualities.
More than just opposites, polarity suggests opposites that are interconnected." Vocabulary.com
When I explore polarities through the expressive arts practice of the mandorla, I become very aware of the relationship between the opposites. In visual art-making and writing, I often discover that each "side" has a perspective that differs dramatically from the other, and yet may have the same ultimate goal. By separating out the "opposites" I am able to discover
something new emerging in the center. This "something new" is much more than a compromise; it is more like an arrival, or a birth. The life lessons are both potent and helpful. I hope you will give it a try.
I have created a complimentary lesson on mandorlas for you.
It includes a guided meditation and full instructions, leading you through the steps to explore a polarity in your life, through art-making and writing.
I would love to hear about your experience!
