Dear Expressive Arts friends,
We are sending out good wishes this morning to everyone in this virtual circle. This image is the center of the circle in our studio and, although right now we can't gather together physically, we still send out the energy of this circle of deep, heartfelt sharing through the arts, as we continue to discover and build upon ways to embrace this process virtually!
Before we update you on workshops and the continuation of Open Studio times, and more, here is a simple process, shared by Tamara and her 7-year old son. Anyone can enjoy and benefit from this playful, body-based exploration. We encourage you to try it and share
it.
Expressive Doodle Drawing
- Gather some simple art materials.
- Take a few breaths and feel the support of the earth beneath you. Allow yourself to become present in the moment.
- Choose 2 colors – one in each hand - and allow them to move freely in the air around you. Using quick or slow movements, whatever feels best, do this for a few minutes.
- Then, place both hands on a large piece of paper and continue moving the colors around freely, like a big doodle. It may help to alternate hands so one can hold the paper, or you can tape it down first.
- Take a few minutes and look at the lines and shapes created. Choose one that you love the most and color it in. Continue spontaneously coloring in shapes with colors that please you until you feel it is complete. There are no rules about how many you do.
- If you see a particular shape, feel free to color It so it is emphasized.
- Notice if any words arrive as you do this and consider writing words in and through the spaces. Give it a name.
- Look at the image you created from a distance, turn it around, and view it in different directions. Write, beginning with the words “I am” and see what happens. It may be a sentence or a phrase, or a whole story.
Tamara and Caleb, did this together and they share their images and writing.
Caleb (left) I am Fishter. I want to go in the water! Because the water is the most fun of all.
That’s all folks!
Tamara (right)
I am a fish in the water. I swim in the trees. The forest is my home. Earthly rhythms I breathe.
Try it - on your own, with your family, with your clients over Zoom.
Let us know how it goes. It's simple, fun, and often surprisingly powerful.
