This workshop will familiarize you with the Harambee Arts Expressive Arts methodology that focuses on a culturally sensitive, collaborative, and relational approach to working with different societies around the world. Using exercises that have been tested and proven successful at counseling sites and other contexts in Africa, Asia, Haiti and Mexico, the workshop addresses learning how you can successfully enter and engage a different culture with respect, curiosity and wonder.
The workshop includes didactic and experiential components and you will be challenged to abandon the well-meaning, Western archetype that professionals who visit other cultures often bring. You will examine the Western need to know, to change, and to make a difference.
This is an interactive workshop! Show up ready to listen, learn, and share. The Zoom forum allows everyone to see everyone else, maximizing the opportunity for experiential learning.
Gloria Simoneaux, MA, REAT, is founding director of Harambee Arts, an expressive arts organization and training program based in sub-Saharan Africa, Nepal, and Haiti. Harambee Arts is designed to serve children and women globally who have been traumatized by illness, poverty, violence, autistic spectrum disorder, trafficking and other crises. She has taught expressive arts to counselors in Nairobi as a Fulbright scholar, affiliated with
the Kenya Association of Professional Counselors. She is the founder of DrawBridge: An Arts Program for Homeless Children, has worked with pediatric oncology patients in San Francisco hospitals and is currently a Fulbright fellowship recipient in Haiti. www.harambeearts.org
