Printmaking is a process of producing multiple artworks by creating an image on a plate or block, then inking this block and pressing paper over the surface. Prints from the same block can be done in different colors and still produce the same image.
Printmaking is a fun and accessible form of art-making! Give it a try!
Registration Deadline: 7 days prior to workshop date. If minimum enrollment is not met, workshop may be canceled. Please register by March 16th if possible.
Students will first sketch or conceive of their image, then prepare their plates with the design. Ink is next rolled on the plate, and multiple artworks will be pressed by hand. These methods don’t require a printing press. Printmaking has been made famous by well-known artists such
as Picasso, Chagall, and Warhol. These artists have created masterpiece prints that are worth millions. Most students are surprised by the difference in the printmaking processes, from other art forms, such as painting. The first surprise is that everything prints backwards! Other differences are the equipment used for the various methods, which are quite unique and interesting to use. Also, it’s fun to create multiple images from one plate or
block.
Judy says of printmaking:
I first began regular printmaking fifteen years ago quite by fate. I was the art teacher scheduled to instruct the course to high school students at Riverview High School. I had briefly studied it in collage, but hadn’t pursued it as an artist. I quickly fell in love with the many forms of printmaking, from simple monotypes to complicated etchings, collagraphs and multi-layered reduction prints. I
then went to State College of FL and took three additional printmaking courses, and I’ve taught the art form ever since. This workshop will focus on two easier methods of printmaking, foam relief prints and monotypes. There will also be a demonstration of linoleum relief printmaking, to spur interest for another printmaking workshop later in the year.
After learning printmaking techniques, many people come to love this way of creating art. Numerous students have told me it was the favorite art class in high school. If you would like to learn a unique and fun new way of creating art, I highly recommend printmaking.
