Dear Creative Friend, Sometimes the most important part of an expressive arts experience happens afterward. - Days later, a phrase returns. An image resurfaces unexpectedly. A gesture, a color, a feeling asks for our attention again.
- Perhaps a dream fragment speaks to us, or we notice an element of nature that seems to be calling us.
- Perhaps we notice that something has shifted in our body. What seemed complete reveals another layer.
Creative practice does not always speak in the moment. Sometimes it whispers over time. As Tamara said in the newsletter last week: "I continue to hear the voice of the
images, movement, and sound explorations as I move about my day." We invite you to: Think back to a recent creative experience. - What stayed with you? Not what you made, but what lingered afterward.
- A feeling?
A color? A
question? A sense of possibility?
We encourage you to notice and follow what emerges. This is how we carry the practice into our daily life. The conversation continues. The image accompanies us. Something lingers, unfolds, ripens, or reveals itself
over time. If you follow me (Kathleen) on Substack, you have witnessed a series of images, and their wisdom unfolding over time. My most recent image, created a week ago, gave me this message:
Witness me. I live deep within you. I am a map that you can see only when you draw me. Let me be your map into the unknown. This morning, as I write, I am aware of a sense of fragmentation as I consider my to-do list. Life feels like a series of unrelated tasks, each pulling my attention in a different direction. When I bring out this image, however, I am immediately drawn to the moon-like illumination at its center. I feel it physically as a gentle power within my own center. As I sit with that sensation, it feels magnetic as well as luminous, as though it is gently gathering and holding
the many strands of my life. What had felt fragmented begins to reveal itself as part of a larger pattern. The shift is subtle, yet profound. I feel it in my body as much as I see it in the image. The individual pieces of my life no longer feel disconnected. Instead, I begin to experience the many tasks before me not as separate demands, but as expressions of a single unfolding conversation. Expressive Arts is a practice of returning—to presence, imagination, and the creative wisdom that is already here. We attune through our images, in whatever modality they emerge. And to do this, we first become quiet. This understanding has shaped much of my work and is at the heart of the upcoming Guided Meditation in Expressive Arts Practice course. Returning to breath. Returning to the body. Returning to the wisdom of the image. Returning to ourselves. Thank you for being on this journey with us, in whatever way you are engaged. Individually and collectively, we bring more life-giving practices into our lives and into the world. We would love to witness you in our private Facebook group. If you are a new member, we look forward to welcoming you. There are a couple of questions for you to answer when you request to join. |
