I am curious - what is your relationship with Expressive Arts? Are you a therapist, facilitator, educator, student, artist? Maybe you are someone just beginning to explore what this field is all about? Are you engaged with expressive arts as a personal practice or is it
your profession? Or both? Perhaps, like us, you are embracing expressive arts as a wisdom path? I (Kathleen) was a psychotherapist when I first discovered the expressive arts. My training, which was highly experiential, and held at a retreat center, took me on a journey that was deep and immediate - effectively changing my life from the inside out. My therapy
practice transformed, and the way I viewed my life shifted. I embraced myself as an artist, and I began to see my arts practice as a way of deeper embodied knowing, of myself and of the world. It became my spiritual practice. In my work, first as an expressive arts therapist and facilitator, and then as an educator, I came to view my role as a guide, reconnecting people with their own wisdom through the practice of intermodal arts. Time after time, with individuals and groups, I witnessed
peoples' amazement as they connected with an un-named mystery that they seemed to be remembering, rather than learning. And I witnessed lives changing - sometimes subtely, sometimes dramatically. And I witnessed my own life changing, and still do, as I commit to this practice. It took awhile longer, though, before I began naming this mystery 'creative wisdom', and it wasn't until a couple of years ago that I began referring to expressive arts as a 'wisdom
path'. |
I move at the pace of my own breath — nothing more is needed. I am at home here. As I understand it, a wisdom path is a way of living life that cultivates depth, integration, embodied understanding, and connection to Earth's natural rhythms. It requires deep listening - not just outwardly, but inwardly - and synthesizes
different ways of knowing, including cognitive, emotional, somatic, and creative. What does it mean to commit to a wisdom path in the midst of a world that is unravelling? This morning I began reading a new book by Liza J. Rankow: Soul Medicine for a Fractured World. She says: these times are a portal calling us to discover the deeper Self that lies within each of us, and the possibilities for our collective evolution. She asks how, in the midst of so much suffering and destruction,
are we called to live? And how do we serve as agents of transformation in the alchemy of these times? She names healing the wound of separation (from our inner selves, each other, Nature, and the Divine, an integration of what has been fractured in ourselves and society, and the revelation of qualities within ourselves that are called forth to meet the chaos, including compassion, creativity, and imagination, empathy, compassion. (Rankow, p. 15-17) I find
truth and inspiration in her words. Expressive Arts as a wisdom path might be seen as an experiential, embodied journey in which the arts become a bridge to inner knowing, relational awareness, and lived transformation. It provides a practice, an orientation to life, a remembering of our deepest values, a reconnection with purpose, and a way to show up in the world,
in our personal and professional lives, and in our relationships, that supports the emergence of a new life-giving way out of the chaos and destruction of the old. It is from this orientation that our new in-person course Expressive Arts as a Wisdom Path: A Journey of Creative Transformation, was conceived. We are offering it for the first time April 14-17, in Sarasota. It is more than a training.
It is an immersion. A circle. A homecoming. It is an experiential, transformational learning environment where the arts are not simply tools — they are guides. Through intermodal expressive arts, we follow image into movement, movement into sound, sound into story, and story into meaning. Each modality opens the next, revealing a living wisdom that is already present within you. Expressive Arts as a Wisdom Path provides: - 25 hours of Expressive Arts Training, applicable to both Expressive Arts Therapy and Facilitation
- 25 CEU's for LMHC, LCSW, LMFT
Who is it for? - Emerging expressive arts seekers who are discovering this path and looking to deepen their understanding and practice
