Hello Creative Friend, This week I witnessed the most unexpected and glorious display of contrasting colors (our month's theme for Mindful Art Play) - deep pink and green of a stunning show of water lilies in a creek not far from where I live. Wow! It took my breath away. I just have to share them with you. Aren't they
stunning?
There were so many - easily hundreds of them all up and down the creek - it felt richly abundant and such a privilege to witness them! What I realized as I observed them is that equal to the blossoms and wide flat leaves on the surface, there was also a portion of the
plant under the water rooted in the mud. Somewhere under this bold beautiful display was a system of stems and roots reaching down into the darkness, drawing nutrients from the muddy soil below. The beauty visible to me was astonishing. Seeing them, beholding their beauty was a gift. I am still enjoying their color display through my memory as they now live in my mind's eye. The curiosity I feel for what lies beneath the surface stays with me as well. I am drawn to that. It reminds me to look
beyond the visible, past the obvious, and listen deeply. I am reminded to be patient and show compassion. The lesson or message for me is to remember we all have "mud beneath the blooms or bursts of color" of some sort. We may be working hard to produce the sweet "fruit of our labor". We may even have pain, loss, confusion lurking unseen behind the colors visible to the
world. Somehow just knowing that helps me extend more empathy and compassion for myself and others. I found this drawing in my sketchbook. I remember when I drew it - the moment to moment joy of following the lines, just responding to the impulses that arose within me. I am so curious now about this image.
What I know is that my images are ahead of me -wow - and I have so much to learn from being with the more than human world. That spending time in nature is the antidote to stress, that something like a flash mob of blossoming lotus can create a wave of compassion within
me for all of those suffering in the world. I can feel a sense of calm, get curious, and pause to send love. I invite you to find something in nature this week that you can connect with and learn from. Just be with it. Notice what stirs within you and how it might help you to move through your day with more ease. Then create an image, let it speak, move, sing to
you.
If you decide to try it and you want to share with us, you can do that in our FB group. We always love to witness your process.
