Hello Creative Friend, We are writing to you in the afterglow of a beautiful week of journeying the world through Expressive Arts! Fourteen of our remarkable students gathered on Zoom, and we were joined by 10 extraordinary presenters from around the world for sharing, learning and inspiration! Our hearts are full! In the midst of so much divisiveness,
despair, and separation in the world, a gathering like this inspires hope and possibility. Gloria Simoneaux and Joyce Oketch from Harambee Arts (Kenya) described their amazing program as a 'love story' and this really resonates as we consider the global expressive arts community. Watch a moving film from the Haramabee Arts love story here. Hector Aristizabal from Colombia led us through powerful encounters with the more-than-human world, and spoke to us about the illusion of separation - from nature and from one another - and the possibilities that working with the arts in community offer.
You can watch a moving video here. Fay Wilkinson offered us 'the power of story', and you can witness heartfelt examples of her 'Stories in Motion'
project on her Vimeo channel here. You are sure to be moved and inspired. We are deeply grateful for each of our presenters: Fiona Chang (Hong Kong), Be Water: Person-centered Expressive Arts in Hong Kong Mayari Hernandez (Guatemala). Technicolor Path: Journey Along the Sacred White Road Markus Scott-Alexander (Canada), Creating Clarity Fay Wilkinson (rural Ontario, Canada), The Power of
Story Manju Jain and Aslam Khader (India, USA) Social and Emotional Learning in India Varvara Sidorova (Russia), Reality and Imagination: Analogue and Digital Art in EXA Hector Aristizabal (Colombia), Listening to the More than Human World Gloria Simoneaux and Joyce Oketch (Harambee Arts, Kenya), A Unique Expressive Arts Program in Kenya Impacts Thousands Each of our students created a visual map of their journey, as a way to reflect along the way, and integrate the experience. The map is one of our favorite "visual arts containers". Here is one exquisite example, created by Renee Bhatia, EAFI Graduate Mentor, who was our teaching assistant in this course.
"I imagine an enchanted world"
Witnessing maps on the last day. The maps we made in this class are maps of where we traveled, rather
than maps to help us plan a trip. Have you ever made a personal 'map' of any kind? Perhaps tracing a journey you have taken (outer or inner), or your life journey, your family, or community? Or even of your day or week? What about a gratitude map that you add something to at the end of each day? There are so many possibilities, and it can be an illuminating and enjoyable process.
If you decide to try it and you want to share with us, you can do that in our FB group. We always love to witness your process. We are currently enrolling for our next in person training course
