We got rain! The ground was so thirsty. Our pond is extremely low. We are in drought conditions, which is not unusual this time of year but it is clearly time for the rains to start soon. When we do get some rain (I mean downpour) life awakens outside. In the yard, where
I am still in the process of preparing and planting, there are so many little tiny plants and flowers that are just waiting dormant for the rains to come. This morning I woke up and went outside to be greeted by these cheerful flowers that popped up overnight!
By the pond, some precious yellow buds appeared.
Someone asked me what soil amendments I would add before planting. I am learning what those need to be. It helps me consider what amendments I need to make the soil of my life richer, so I can grow, blossom, thrive. What do you need in your life soil? What is waiting to
pop up for you when the rains come? Is your creative spirit thirsty for a fresh rain shower? What form does that take for your creative practice? A fun new art material? A new process? Time set aside at the beginning or end of the day? I invite you to consider what nutrients your creative practice needs and then try something that you think might help it
grow. From Kathleen: Tamara asks us to consider what amendments I need to make the soil of my life richer, so I can grow, blossom, and thrive. Sitting with this question this morning, here is what arrived: Immersing myself in a place of wild, authentic, unpolished beauty, and a culture that seems to live close to the land and close to the heart, I experience an inner imperative to live a simpler, more authentic life. As I pick up and examine ancient, exquisitely colored stones
from the shore I ask myself 'what are the gifts that I have to offer in this time of later life?' When I consider how each stone has been shaped by land and sea, I wonder: 'How has my life history shaped me and crystallized into this 'now period' ? How do I live from my essence and share in the world through my expressive arts practice?
Travel, and immersion in lands and ways of life that are different from my own, gift me with the space and time to "loosen the soil of my life" and to unearth the gems of my own history in the light of today. A little time each morning with my journal, reflecting
through art, writing, and photography, is a treasured and fruitful part of my routine, and I will continue this practice when I step back into the flow of my 'daily life'. My next steps are emerging, not so much through problem-solving or decision-making, but through a slow ripening, like a fruit that has been well nourished through tending its soil. I look forward to sharing when the fruit is ripe and ready, and I am immensely grateful. - Kathleen, Ikaria,
