Dear Creative Friend, In last week's newsletter, we focused on the arts as a language for connecting with, and expressing the emotions. The expressive arts allow us to witness and understand
our inner landscape in a rich and potent way. Today, we want to extend this idea into the realm of story. Fay Wilkinson, REACE, is a 'Storycatcher", using innovative expressive arts practices to discover and tell the untold. Fay, a wonderful friend and colleague based in rural Ontario, Canada, has been a treasured guest presenter in our Expressive Arts in the World course for many years. We had such a powerful experience in her 2024 presentation that we asked her to create this workshop series - Bridging into Story: Exploring Ways to Tell the Untold - for our online community. And it is coming up in
February! My recent experience with Fay's storycatcher approach, yielded this: I began by spontaneously choosing an image of colored threads, from a Maiwa catalogue I had near by.
Then, using some simple prompts that Fay offered, I wrote the following: Once there was a box of threads in every
color of the earth. And everyday an old woman would take the lid off the box and look with her eyes, touch with hands, and dream with her heart, about what she could stitch with them. But she didn't stitch a thing. Until one day the rusty orange thread fell out of the box and onto the floor. And because of that the woman picked up the thread, grabbed an old ragged
tea towel from her drawer, and to stitch. She stitched every day, sometimes from dawn until dusk, and even far into the night. Until finally she had used every thread of every color, and she had stitched a new world - a world she wanted us all to live in. And, ever since, we all have. This story has stayed with me over the months since Fay's workshop. It taught me something I didn't know about myself; something I was carrying that took the arts process to make visible. It gave me language for something previously unexpressed, and a perspective on my unfolding life journey. And
I am deeply grateful for that. Scroll down to learn more about Fay's work and consider this opportunity to work with her. Fay offers accessible, simple, creative processes that will transport you! And remember -
Art as a Healing Practice is offered at a 40 % discount just until the
end of January. It is another potent way to discover and honor more about your longings and inner experience. In one module, you list and explore your 'creative steppingstones', which I will write more about next week. I also want to point out that both Bridging into Story and Art as a Healing Practice are great examples of expressive arts facilitation, not
therapy. Although deeply healing, they are carefully crafted to empower the participant as their own guide. While we deeply value, practice, and train expressive arts therapy at EAFI, we lift up and highlight the facilitator path and the many innovative ways of offering this work in the world.
If you would like a carefully crafted structure for your art and healing journey, we are offering a 40% discount on the Art as a Healing Practice workshop series. This special price will remain in effect until January 31st. Use the coupon code NEWYEAR2025
Art as a Healing Practice helped me discover a genuine expression of myself. With Kathleen's excellent guidance, we explored, through meditations and our artwork, the deep messages our art offered up to
us. This program helped me navigate through grief and was profoundly healing. ~ Terry
