Dear Creative Friend, Someone recently shared with me (Tamara) that it is less important to know "why" than it is to know
"what" is arriving. Along our unfolding path in life, getting to know what is happening within us is key to navigating changes around us. Right now, there is so much change happening in the world around us. It is natural to ask why. It feels even more important to me (Tamara) to ask "what" and "how" about my inner response. What is rising up in me? What do I notice? How does it feel, look, sound? The best way for me to stay current to my inner life is through my expressive arts practice because
it helps me know the details of my experience. I gain better understanding and access information needed to discern how to act, what to respond to and how. As you know we are in the process of exploring new possibilities for training and other expressive arts offerings after this year. We are using our arts practice to listen deeply, to help us discern.
There are many metaphors that arrive to assist us along the way. Recently in open studio a new image and story arrived. In my image and story, there is also mystery. I do not fully understand yet. That is alright with me, though, because I trust my process. Expressive arts practice is trustworthy. This I know. Here is part of my
story:
.... Underlying was a system of trails she followed for many years - a lifetime really....She meandered and turned, took fateful detours and delightful pauses....Then one day, a trail pushed upward, rose to the top, and broke through. It emerged like the olive
tree out of the craggy peaks and branched immediately to form a canopy of wisdom. Its roots ran deep and its knowing was ancient. There was really nothing sudden about it, yet it felt like a surprise to the surface dwellers. With the branching wonder came a lesson of trust..... You just never know what will arrive when you engage with the arts. Being open
and trusting is all you need to do. Holding yourself with gentle loving kindness is key, too. Having self-compassion, acceptance of your own imagery and the surprises they bring with them can be challenging, but also rewarding. A quote from Danielle Laporte in "How to Be Loving": Whatever is arising is coming up to be healed. Engage
peacefully with all of it. We invite you to try this: Position yourself in a room with a bit of space around you, so that you can move freely. Begin standing if that is available to you. Close your eyes
or soften your gaze. Place your hands on your heart. Tune in to your body and notice any movement impulses. Move, from the inside out, in any way that your body wants to. Movements can be big or small, fast or slow, or even real or imagined. Continue for about 5 minutes or whatever feels right. Open your eyes and go to some art materials. Using any colors make spontaneous marks, just trusting yourself. Continue for 5 minutes or so. Look at your image. Listen to what it might say to you. Write
down what it says. Close your eyes, and tune in to yourself. Ask yourself: how did I experience this in my body? In my heart? In my mind? In my spirit? Write out the story of your image. Read it aloud to yourself.
Our last Storytelling workshop of the Bridging into Story series is Tuesday. It has been exciting to learn new ways to tell the untold. This year's SoulCollage® series starts Tuesday evening and then our next core course is coming up at the end of
the month, EAFI 200 Facitlitation Skills in Expressive Arts. The last start date for the
program in time to get all of the core courses this year is April 1-4. |
We hope you will take time this week for your own arts practice and listen within. If you would you like to share your personal practice images, you can do that in our private Facebook group . It is a sanctuary for witnessing
one another. (If you are a new member, please be sure to answer the questions and agree to the rules. That helps us to hold a safe and welcoming space.)
With love and gratitude, Tamara, Kathleen, and the Expressive Arts Florida
