Hello Creative Friends, This past week, we taught Expressive Arts in the World. Designed to inspire and expand our students' visions for EXA work, this course consists mainly of a series of guest presenters from around the world, and Tamara and I (Kathleen) guide the students in assimilating and integrating all of these experiences through discussion,
arts process, and the creation of a personal map. It feels like a celebration of global connection and sharing through the expressive arts language, and we are grateful to both our students and to our generous and inspiring colleagues.
Two of the completed maps Markus Scott-Alexander, Mayari Hernandez and Pili Garin, Fiona Chang, Gloria Simoneaux and Harambee Arts, Varvara Sidorova, Fay
Wilkinson, Hector Aristizabal, Manju Jain and Aslam Khader guided and enriched us all. A big hug of thanks to each of you!
We explored story, movement, music, visual art, culture-based expressive arts, our names, the Mayan worldview, shining light on dark places and bringing hope to despair, family, home, more-than-human beings, personal symbols, untold stories, and traditional art forms from several cultures. Markus asked us to consider 'what precedes
our differences?'. Varvara shared that 'nature and culture are connected by our bodies'. The Tree of Life - a universal symbol - was a recurring theme. Outer travels were interwoven with powerful inner travels, as we deeply explored ourselves and shared with one another.
Personal symbols evolve from movement-based practice with Varvara Sidorova, from
Russia. Our mixed media maps trace our journeys - they are maps that show us where we have been and what we have learned along the way. Heidi said it this way: My map, vibrant with colors and symbols from diverse traditions, tells stories of love,
struggle, and resilience. By embracing what unites us, we can fully appreciate and celebrate what makes each of us unique and exquisitely different. Try this: Explore maps: Using one or more art
forms, create a map of your day, your month, or your year. Include both your outer and your inner journey. Try visual art, movement, rhythm, poetry, or photography. Or make it intermodal. Could you make a map of places you have lived? Of your dreams? Find your own way, follow your creative impulses, and see what you discover. Most of all, follow whatever pleases you.
If you haven't registered already, it's not too late to join us for Expressive Arts Discovery tomorrow (Monday) from 1:00-2:30pm EDT. If you're in Sarasota
or close by, we also have an in person opportunity to connect this Friday! Join us for In Person Open Studio any time from
10:00am-1:00pm EDT at First Congregational Church. Next week we have Online Open

Would you like to share your personal practice images? Our private Facebook group is a sanctuary
for witnessing one another. It is not a place to share or promote your professional work; it is a place to share the images the arise from your deepest creative wisdom. (If you are a new member, please be sure to answer the questions and agree to the rules. That helps us to hold a safe and welcoming space.)
We hope to see you in the circle soon. With gratitude, Kathleen, Tamara, & the Expressive Arts Florida Team |

Emerge In this course, you will be guided to follow the little voice inside that opens up a path to what comes next. The “next” that you do not know yet. The part that is still a mystery but seems to be calling to you. You listen with each stroke, color, pause, line, and shape. As you emerge, something begins to take form. Something new and precious, not yet named or identified. You are called to be with it, welcome it, and offer your presence to
it – so that you may learn from what has arrived and is beckoning you. Like a whisper or the day’s first birdsong.
