Dear Creative Friends, Being fully present to fear, to gratitude, to all that is — this
is the practice of mutual belonging. As living members of the living body of Earth, we are grounded in that kind of belonging. Even when faced with cataclysmic changes, nothing can ever separate us from Earth. We are already home.” – Joanna Macy
Earth Day reminds us to pay attention, to take stock of our relationship with our Mother Earth, to embrace connection, and to remember our belonging. Joanna Macy's words, borrowed from The Work that Reconnects website, say it perfectly. Expressive arts and nature-based practices can help us tune in to ourselves/nature, and express and honor that belonging.
In EAFI 110 (Dive in To Expressive Arts) recently, our students created sculptures by collecting a few natural objects. We invite you to try this yourself. Take a walk in your neighborhood, allowing your eyes to take in more than you might usually notice. See the veins of the brown leaves on the sidewalk, the color variations in the stones, the elegance of a flower petal as it detaches from the tree, and floats to the ground. Notice the raindrop, suspended and glistening at the point of the green leaf. With care and discernment, collect some
(5-8) of these elements of nature, and bring them to your art space. Avoid choosing anything that disrupts the balance. Lay out these gifts on your table and take them in with your eyes and your heart. Choose one that draws your attention, and more fully witness it, using these instructions from our course.
Now, begin arranging and exploring how you might bring this and the other natural elements together in a sculpture. You can use wire, clay, glue or thread to hold them together. Keep it simple.
When it feels complete, hold your sculpture in your hand, and notice what feelings and thoughts it evokes in you. Ask your sculpture: What is your name?
What would you like me to know? Write down its message for you, and find a place of honor to place your sculpture and its words. Return to it, and meditate on it's message. If this was meaningful for you, you might want more like it.
Here are some of our nature-based complimentary resources:
If you would like to share your sculpture in our private FB group, we would love to witness. If you are not yet a member, please be sure to answer the questions and agree to the group rules in order to join. With gratitude, Kathleen, Tamara, and the Expressive Arts Florida Team
