Dear Creative Friends, We are just about at the end of the school
year, the beginning of summer, feeling the heat in Florida and clearly on the brink of a new chapter in the year. It is exciting and also opens up questions. Like last week with Big Questions, there may be small questions lingering in your mind about what comes next. For us, there are some shifts in geography and daily rhythms as school lets out and summer travel commences. It also means a somewhat lighter schedule with fewer offerings in the next couple of months. We are always planning for what is upcoming and will share more, but today I (Tamara) am pondering how new chapters begin as old chapters are completed. I have been drawn back into bookmaking and notice that the act of constructing books gives me so much joy! As a friend celebrated her retirement, I gifted her a tiny book with no words as it felt fitting to invite her to write the next chapter in her life. I think that is why I like creating them - because they invite a story to
unfold to fill the pages. When we embark on something new, it is reassuring to have a place to record the story of it's unfolding. Rather than having it all figured out and the "story already written", the new empty pages inspire curiosity and wonder about the future. What are your summer plans? What do you see opening up in your life as
possibilities for the next few weeks or months? Do you feel a sense of hope or are you feeling anxious about not knowing? We invite you to consider creating a container for the new chapters you are entering. You might try the simple process of buying a new sketchbook and decorating the cover with collage or paint markers. If you like bookmaking as
much I do, create your own art journal and begin making marks and write the new story in images. Reflect on the events in your life and your experience of them. It doesn't have to be big either. I have been having fun with little miniature books this week. What if each day or week you just create a small image on a little page? Make it manageable and
fun. If you need a simple structure for a quick book to make, I have created this quick video for you so you can try it.
