Dear Creative Friends, This week we continued to cultivate the seeds under the surface as we tended to
healing and repair of various kinds. In our practices, we each spent time listening and noticing even small shifts. Simple practices like Authentic Movement, brief art journal entries, short writings, and nature witnessing offered support. It can be surprising how little time it takes to tune in and find an image, word, or movement that feels just right - just what you need. Having a regular expressive arts practice gives us the tools we need to take care of ourselves in times of stress when we feel challenged. It's like building creative muscles that we can rely on when we need extra strength or just need a place to turn to, a soft place to land.
Sometimes we simply sit with our art supplies out and see what happens without any idea or place to start. We often say "just make a mark, and then another mark". When we use art modalities, we might take for granted the things we know about them.
In visual art and movement, for instance, we have line, shape, size, rythym, pattern. The two modalities - visual art and movement - can be reflected in one another. Just for fun, try this: Stand in a comfortable position and tune into your body. Begin to make some shapes with your arms, legs, hands, hips, feet. Experiment with different ways to move
- fast or slow and repeat movements that are curvy, zigzag, or straight. As you move around notice if you see any images in your mind. Can you imagine the lines or shapes? How does the pattern feel and look? Play around with your movements and then sit down and let them make marks on the paper to express their elements just to see what happens. Take your time and add on anything that you like. Then, let it speak and tell its story - "I am..."
We invite you to play this week with your practice. Allow it to be fun and open. Just see where it takes you. Allow your practice to support you. If you need some new ideas or easy-to-go-to processes our featured self-study might help. We would love to have you share in the Facebook group if you would like to be witnessed by others.
We hope to see you in the circle soon. In gratitude, Tamara, Kathleen, and the EAFI Team
