Do you have a writing practice? What forms do you use? Free writing in your journal? Morning pages? Haiku? Or do you hesitate to write, or have a hard time knowing where to start? Writing is
a modality that is integral to expressive arts practice, weaving its way in and out of the other modalities of visual art, movement, sound, and more. The written word can take many forms, and it is a pathway to better understanding ourselves, each other, and the world. You may often hear us say that everyone is an artist. We maintain that everyone is a writer, too, and we can learn and practice ways to tell our stories, to listen more deeply - to ourselves, to others, and to the Earth. A
safe space and a compassionate, skilled guide can help encourage our writing voice to emerge.
Expressive Arts students engaged in contemplative writing, and a journal page from one of Susan O'Connell's poetic medicine circles. Two of our favorite writing facilitators are offering workshops this month. Anne Hofland's 5-week expressive writing series has been rescheduled to begin on Nov. 20, and Susan O'Connell's poetic medicine circle is coming up on Nov. 27. - Anne offers writing prompts,
time to write, the opportunity to share and to listen, in a safe space where sharing is always optional, and feedback is always positive.
- Susan offers a safe space and a heart opening process that increases self-awareness, compassion, and gratitude, where we read, listen, and are invited to respond to the poetry of the earth.
With each, you are sure to have a writing experience that is both powerful and nurturing. It is our honor to bring them to you. |
Try this: Take a slow, contemplative walk around your neighborhood, yard, or patio. Let your eyes wander over the colors, shapes, patterns. Notice any fragrances you smell. Feel the breeze, the
temperature, notice the play of light, and listen to any sounds. Let your eyes come to rest in one place - perhaps on a leaf, a plant, a tree, a stone - anything is OK, natural or human-made. Take a minute or two to simply be with whatever it is that you have chosen. Notice how it resonates or echoes within you. Invite yourself to
write, spontaneously, in its language or voice. What would happen if you could speak in its language? Be curious and see what happens as your write spontaneously. Then, write, in your own voice, in response. Circle any key phrases or words in both segments of your writing. Use those to write a poem. Keep, in your journal, your writings, your poem, and a photo of the element you chose. We invite you to share, this or any other images/writings from your personal practice in our Facebook
group. If you are not yet a member, please answer the questions and agree to the group rules when you request to join.)
We hope to see you in the
circle soon.
With love and gratitude, Kathleen,
Tamara and the Expressive Arts Florida Team
