Dear In expressive
arts we come home to ourselves and witness our lives and the world around us in new ways. We learn more about our unique and authentic contributions and we hold space for the fullness of our experinces in life. Sometimes we encounter a critical inner voice or challenging and tender places. In our world now we are experiencing many difficulties and must be present to the pain, devastation, and crises while still doing our best to connect, heal, and grow. Often it is difficult to know how to do
that or how to take compassionate action. We can begin by practicing self-compassion, which helps us to be present to ourselves in a way that enables us to hold space for others in a loving and supportive way. "Self-compassion emerges from the heart of mindfulness when we meet suffering in our lives Mindfulness invites us to open to suffering with
loving, spacious awareness. Self-compassion adds, 'be kind to yourself in the midst of suffering.' Together, mindfulness and self-compassion form a state of warmhearted, connected presence during difficult moments in our lives." - Kristen Neff, The Mindful Self-Compassion Workbook |
This month we are focusing on self-compassion in a few ways. On November 16, Kathleen and Tamara will be presenting an experiential workshop, “Cultivating Self-Compassion through
Expressive Arts Practice” Expressive Therapies Virtual Summit. This year’s summit will be held over two 4-day weekends: November 2 - 5 and 16 - 19. All programming is being taught live online, is interactive, and will not be available for later viewing. Please join us on Thursday, November 16, from 10 am-1 pm est. This Summit offers up 60 total hours of CEs that any one person can acquire, but you can register for just one session or as many as 20 — it's up to you! You can find the Full Program and register at expressivetherapiessummit.com/virtual-summits On Friday, November 17 Tamara and Kathleen will present Cultivating Self-Compassion in person from 2-5 pm est following Open Studio. You can listen to a recent podcast episode where they shared more about
expressive arts practice and self-compassion with Reina Lombardo on her Creative Psychotherapist Podcast here.
We encourage you to consider ways that you can use self-compassion in your own life and practice. Here is a simple suggestion for exploring it further using some art materials. First, find a
quiet space and take some time to listen within. You might like to place your hands on your heart, breathing gently and allowing your hands to warm your heart center. As you close your eyes and focus on sending love to yourself, notice if there is anything that arises as a tender place within you that needs some extra care. You might consider creating a simple image or moving gently for a few minutes to tend to this place within you. Then, write down a message from the movement or image about
what it needs from you. After you have identified this need, offer it in words and intention using a writing prompt, "May you feel/receive/accept (insert the need)", and finally place your hands on your heart again and offer the same to yourself in a whisper or out loud. "May I receive/feel/accept _________". You may identify a few things and if so, repeat the words "May I" for each one. For example, "May I receive forgiveness. May I feel loved. May I accept care." We invite you to share in our Facebook group. If you are not yet a member, please answer the questions and agree to the group rules when you request to join.) We hope to see you in the circle soon.
With love and gratitude, Kathleen,
Tamara and the Expressive Arts Florida Team
