Dear In last week's newsletter I wrote a bit about doors to the wild self, in response to a quote from Clarissa Pinkola Estes. One of the doors, says Estes, can be an 'old old story'.
You know the kind - the story that limits our life so completely that we experience it as truth, rather than as a story that can be revised, or even re-written. A pervasive old story that keeps us tethered to a life path that is imprisonment disguised as safety, a story so loud that it drowns out the echoes of our longings for something more. For about the first forty
years of my life "I am not an artist" was an old story. I won't go into all the reasons for it here, as I have written about it in other places, but what I learned was that this belief lived in the exact place in my being where the potential for healing and transformation was the greatest. And, at a certain point in life the wound opened and the transformation burst through
like some original exuberant flowering plant that had never before been witnessed. It was beautiful, scary, dramatic, a huge relief, and not always pretty. I didn't have a map.
It is no accident that my art journals and sketchbooks are filled with images of seeds sprouting and bursting through rock, ice, ocean floor. And all of it emerges from the unconscious, through the way of knowing of images, writing, and dreams.
Cognitive understanding comes later.
I sometimes wonder how much energy it took to keep all those images locked inside of myself all those years. And
the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful that the risk it took to blossom. - Anais Nin
So, yes, Art was, and is 'my healing practice'. It is the reversal of the old story. I am not an artist is part 1 of my story, and art is the healing practice is part 2. Part 2 has been all about creating my own map, healing, and discovering this work
we call 'expressive arts'. It has been about the transformation of the wound into the gift of my own life purpose. Art as a Healing Practice is in some ways a map that I have created, both for myself, and for others. Begun about 20 years ago, it evolves as I evolve, and as I learn from the experience of those I share it with. “Art as a Healing Practice has been a life changing experience for me. When Kathleen offered the experience I was creatively blocked and needed to find a solution. I started my Art as a Healing Practice journey to get in touch with my creative self again and while traveling this
path I began to see changes in my life also. Kathleen was a wise and reassuring guide and facilitator during this journey. AHP is now a part of my
everyday life and practice. I will always be grateful!!!” Karen Hammond USA I am fully engaged in preparing the most complete version of Art as a Healing Practice than I have offered to date. It will all be in one place for you, and yours to keep and revisit any time - nine themes/nine lessons, each with nature-based practices, newly-recorded meditations, art-making invitations, intermodal practice,
writing exercises, nuggets of wisdom, demos, videos, quotes, resources and inspirations + four live Zoom sessions for sharing and process. We are still working out all the details, but we know it will be birthed on January 1.
What about you? - Is there an old old story in your life that is
ready to be re-written?
- Is there a link between your creative journey and your healing journey?
- What forms of expression feel free and available to you, and what do you
feel cut off from? Dance, visual art, voice, writing? How did this happen?
- If you listen deeply, is there a longing trying to make itself known?
Use these questions to lead you into
art-making, writing, moving, or making music. Start with any modality, perhaps the one you are most comfortable with, and either stay with that, or let one modality lead to another. We would love to witness any part of your exploration in our private FB group. Read on to see all that is coming up! We hope to see you in the circle soon.
With love, Kathleen, Tamara, and the EAFI Team |
