Dear Thank you so
much to everyone who purchased one of our bundles during last weekend's sale! We felt so inspired while creating these new courses for you and we hope you are enjoying them.We would love to witness your images, nature elements, and/or writing in our private FB group. We offer a deep bow of thanks to Susan O'Connell, of wildreciprocity.com for her beautiful poetic medicine workshop this past week.
Susan's passion lies at the intersection of the mystic heart, creative expression, and care of the earth. Her invitations to work in a fluid way with poems, nature, and gentle prompts
reminds me (Kathleen) of the importance of expanding our experience of self to that of our 'ecological self'. From this perspective, we experience ourselves AS nature, and we are challenged with the vital task of learning how to feel, think, and behave from an attitude of reciprocity. I am currently reading Returning the Self to Nature: Undoing our Collective Narcissism and Healing our Planet by the wonderful Jeanine M. Canty and I highly recommend her work. I also am thinking of Nature-Based Expressive Arts Therapy: Integrating the Expressive Arts and Ecotherapy by Sally Atkins and Melia
Snyder, an excellent book that addresses the beautiful pairing of these two fields of work.
Try this: - Read this poem (aloud is best)
Especially in spring the world resists our best designs what is alive blooms in white stars on a green carpet what is alive dissolves the flatness of our language what is alive wants to crawl out of the little boxes we have made with words ....Sally Atkins, 2010
- Read it again, and allow your body to move with the words, the rhythm, the theme.
- Repeat that, with movement emphasis on the phrases that resonate most deeply.
- If you have a drum or rattle, add rhythm as you read.
- Spend some time in spontaneous art-making
- Write. Maybe a new poem, or a story emerges.
- Share in our FB group, if you like. We would love to witness you.
The expressive
arts provides a supportive and vital pathway to healing our relationship to the natural world. And healing that relationship, remembering ourselves as part of nature, is essential for survival. The dedication page to Jeanine Canty's book reads: This book is dedicated to Earth and all her beloveds, each
and every sentient being. May we remember that we are family, unraveling our dysfunctions, and renewing our bonds. Yes, may we. It is not easy work and it is vital work. And, as Susan O'Connell so beautifully states, perhaps we can discover that remembering at the intersection of the mystic heart, creative expression, and care of the
earth. If this work resonates with you, we have a few resources to support your exploration.
May you each find your way into the natural world this weekend, in whatever way that is available to you, remembering always, that you are part of it. May you feel love and compassion for
yourself, as you feel love and compassion for the river, the mountain, the stone, your cat, and the tiny blossom that pushes its way through the crack in the concrete. May you each find moments to dance, to sing, to take pen to paper or brush to canvas, knowing that your imagination, your creative voice, are pathways to remembering, to healing, to reciprocity. We hope
to see you in the circle soon. We are vital supports for one another. With love, Kathleen, Tamara, and the EAFI Team |
